Intermedia SpamStopper Email Filtering (Intermedia’s homegrown email security solution)

Following the Intel Security announcement to end of life the McAfee SaaS Email Protection & Continuity, Intel Security has formally advised partners and customers migrate to Proofpoint, Inc (Gartner leader for Secure Email Gateways). Instead of transitioning existing McAfee customers to Proofpoint, Intermedia has made the decision to invest in enhancing their own SpamStopper service as the standard email security service for all Intermedia Customers.

Intermedia relied heavily on MX Logic/McAfee SaaS Email Protection and have provided support for the service leveraging port 25 by default for all customers using their hosted email service. Many of these customers have now migrated back to the Intermedia SpamStopper service and would prefer to use an alternative proven provider such as Proofpoint.

Intermedia with Proofpoint (the problem)

Intermedia provided McAfee SaaS Email Protection & Continuity (MX Logic) on port 25 as the default spam filtering solution for all hosted exchange customers, but offers port 2501 as an alternative port for delivery. Proofpoint Essentials only connects to port 25 and therefore this presents inherent double scanning issues when trying to connect to Intermedia.

When attempting to run Proofpoint with Intermedia on port 25, all email will be delivered correctly but; all mail will be scanned first by Proofpoint and then again by McAfee SaaS, which causes ALL email received by the user to be delivered the ‘Junk’ mailbox. With the degraded performance of the McAfee service, many customers do not want to have their mail filtered by both solutions and would prefer to leverage Proofpoint as a standalone email security solution as an alternative to Intermedia SpamStopper.

Intermedia with Proofpoint (the solution)

Spambrella have developed a proprietary Intermedia-Proofpoint connector service which is successfully used by a number of Intermedia MSP partners and customers. The Spambrella solution enables Intermedia hosted exchange customers to utilize Proofpoint on the Intermedia alternative delivery port, 2501.

Our connecter for Intermedia partners and customers is not available through Proofpoint directly or any other partner and can only be ordered via Spambrella.

This unique solution for Intermedia customers is secure, reliable and allows current Intermedia customers to take advantage of the industry leading Proofpoint Essentials architecture and protection.

Robust, versatile, and reliable...
The reliability of the service and the level of protection that it provides. My spam levels immediately dropped to near zero.

There are almost no false positives. And I'm easily able to customize the level of protection with whitelists, blacklists, and sensitivity settings. I'm also a big fan of the antivirus and URL scanning features.

The service is great at filtering bad email as well as junk email out while allowing clean email though. I have used a few other options over the years and this is the best I have found. Clients sometimes have trouble configuring their settings to how they want it to be. Or tag emails as approved when they shouldn't and need IT interaction to resolve. Maybe just ease of use or having a more clear way for clients to resolve basics on their own.
