Spambrella provides businesses with Cloud-based Email Security, Continuity, Encryption and Archiving functionality backed by Proofpoint’s best-of-breed technology and infrastructure.
The Spambrella platform is currently undergoing an 18-month evolution, beginning in Q4 2015, which will enable rapid scalability to enable over 10X of business growth.
This evolution will continue to ensure higher levels of performance and service reliability, even during times of traffic spikes or large threat volume. It will also provide our customers with increased information and protection against the growing threat landscape.
The Spambrella architecture changes will be rolled out behind the scenes throughout the evolution, providing benefits at every step of the way. All of these changes will be introduced transparently with no actions required by our customers or partners.
The core architectural change is moving from the use of a central database for configuration and logging data, as is typical in most enterprise cloud services, to a distributed asynchronous architecture. This allows each piece of the architecture to elastically scale independent of the other components to deliver resiliency, scalability and availability as well as seamless geo-redundancy.
This global architecture is built with native active-active geographic redundancy to offer high availability, but is also architected such that there is no single point of failure within each datacenter.
Built using state-of-the-art big data technology that has been proven to work at the largest scale, this evolution represents a large investment by Proofpoint to ensure we continue to provide the best solutions in the market for years to come.
Key milestones on the evolution include:
1. Q4 2015 – New Geographic Failover Architecture [Complete]
» This has been implemented based on active replication of configuration and log data between active and failover datacenters. This allows for a rapid move to the failover site in case of a major outage in the primary site.
2. First Half of 2016 – Enablement of Replicated Read-only Databases [Complete]
» This takes the read-heavy consumers load off the central database to allow for increased reliability and scale. Most importantly, all Spambrella engines can read their per-message configuration from redundant read-only databases, ensuring that email continues to be processed independently of database operations.
» The enablement of asynchronous event writes from the Spambrella engines to the database through use of a distributed, fault-tolerant and durable event queue ensuring there is no data loss. The Spambrella engine pushes events to the queue for asynchronous consumption by downstream services enabling the Spambrella scanning engines to deliver mail without delay.
3. Second Half of 2016 – Migration to a NoSQL Database Architecture for Logging Data [Complete]
» As the volume of logged data increases through growth in customer volume and a more complex threat landscape, a NoSQL database provides a highly available, high performance, horizontally scalable database to manage these large volumes of data, while providing no single point of failure. Native support for cross datacenter replication also provides a seamless path to true geo-redundancy.
4. 2017 – Active-active Cross-datacenter Email Flow [Complete]
» By leveraging the above work, user email will flow across multiple datacenters simultaneously, with global load balancing, to ensure continuous email flow in case of a datacenter issue.
These investments all leverage key technologies used extensively not only in technology leaders such as Facebook, Google, and LinkedIn, but also in other cloud services, where they are used to manage billions of data points. This deep industry and company knowledge allows us to evolve the core architecture while continuing to provide high quality service to our growing set of partners and customers.
