Move Microsoft 365 email away from GoDaddy to Self Manage
This process moves your Microsoft tenant away from GoDaddy. Think of your tenant like your digital “home” for your organization within the Microsoft cloud where your data and users are managed.
Warning: Please be aware of the following:
- Moving your email does not release your domain from your Microsoft tenant. The domain will remain associated with your tenant.
- The tenant you want to move cannot be combined with an existing tenant.
- Do not delete your mailboxes at GoDaddy prior to the move.
- Do not purchase new mailboxes directly from Microsoft or another reseller until your move is finished. Buying mailboxes early will create a new tenant that cannot be merged with your existing tenant.
- Your Microsoft 365 plans or licenses bought through GoDaddy won’t transfer to Microsoft and will be subject to the Refund Policy.
- You’ll need to purchase new Microsoft 365 licenses from Microsoft or your new reseller after the move.
- Once the migration is complete, we’ll no longer provide support for your Microsoft 365 services since your account will be removed from our system.

The move process
When you want to move your email organization away from GoDaddy:
- Confirm your email accounts are active and don’t expire within the next 5 business days. During this time, GoDaddy remains your email provider.
- If you have multiple domains in one organization, the move will affect all associated domains. If you aren’t sure which domains are linked, please contact GoDaddy support.
- GoDaddy will create a ticket for your move request.
- After the ticket is created, GoDaddy send a temporary password to your GoDaddy account’s email address on the next business day (excluding holidays). This email address can’t be one that’s moving away from GoDaddy during this process.
Note: If you have Email Archiving through GoDaddy on the tenant you’re moving away that you wish to keep, you’ll need to take additional steps to complete the move.
- You’ll need to sign into the existing tenant at Microsoft directly using the temporary password GoDaddy send you.
- All admin email addresses will have their password changed to the same temporary password.
- Purchase the plans you need to continue service with the new provider. Please note if you purchase plan types different from what’s already on the organization, you’ll need to license the users with those new plans.
- When purchasing licenses, you might still see the option to purchase from GoDaddy, as well as from Microsoft.
- During this time, you should only purchase licenses from Microsoft or another Microsoft 365 reseller.
- If the purchased license is different from the original license, you will need to remove the GoDaddy license from that user before assigning the newly purchased license.
- After your request to move is completed, you’ll need to decide what to do with your Microsoft 365 email plans from GoDaddy:
- If you no longer want to use the email plans, remove them from your GoDaddy account.
- Or, use the plans to set up new email users in a different organization.
Please note that we won’t be able to remove GoDaddy as the reseller associated with your tenant until all of your GoDaddy subscriptions have expired. The subscription expiration date may be different than the plan expiration date shown on your Renewals & Billing page. You’ll still be able to manage your accounts with your new provider during this time.
Requirements to move
Before moving your Microsoft 365 email away from GoDaddy:
- You must be able to validate your GoDaddy account.
- The email associated with your GoDaddy account cannot be the email address moving away.
- Your email plans must be active and not in a suspended or failed billing state.
- You must be able to specify what is happening with your archiving plan, if applicable.
- If you want to keep any email quarantined by Advanced Email Security from Proofpoint, you must release it.
Required: If you have Advanced Email Security from Proofpoint, update your MX records before moving away from GoDaddy to maintain mail flow. If your domain has hyphens or special characters, or you’re not sure how to update your MX records, contact GoDaddy support.
Delete MX records mx1-us1.ppe-hosted.com and mx2-us1.ppe-hosted.com, replacing them with [yourdomain-com].mail.protection.outlook.com (replace “yourdomain.com” with your domain). For example, if your domain is coolexample.com, your MX record will be:
- Host Name: @ or blank
- MX Value: coolexample-com.mail.protection.outlook.com
- Priority: 0 or lowest available
- TTL: 3600 seconds
