Options for Handling Bulk-Email

Spambrella does not ordinarily quarantine legitimate bulk-email. That is an email that is sent to a large list of recipients who have either directly or passively agreed to receive communications from the sender or senders. In some cases, however, if an email scores as both moderate spam and high on the bulk-email scale, it may be quarantined. To help further manage legitimate bulk-email an organization can additionally enable the setting “Quarantine Bulk-Email” which, when activated, will automatically quarantine any email that scores high as bulk-email. This setting can be enabled at both the organization and the end-user level.

What is bulk-email?

Bulk-email or Graymail is a service that allows its customers to send mass email messages to multiple lists of recipients at a specified time. With this service, you can send a single message to thousands of people on a mailing list or a personalized email to each address on a list. A bulk-email service can send emails to a list of any size. Most of these providers price their offerings based on the number and frequency of the emails one wants to send.

How many emails constitute bulk-email?

All internet providers have thresholds for when they consider a bulk-email to be abusive of their network. There is no set number as most internet providers vary this limit. A rule of thumb is to try to not send more than 100 messages per hour to a given network, and no more than 10 at a time.

How can I legally send unsolicited bulk-email?

It is a legal requirement under the CAN-SPAM Act of 2003, enacted in 2004, that if your email is a solicitation, that fact must be clearly communicated, along with who you are and what you are soliciting.

How can Spambrella help with bulk-email?

Spambrella includes classifiers that categorize email and enable granular dispositions on those categories such as graymail “bulk mail” (e.g. newsletters, opt-in emails, etc.). Unlike Office 365 and Google’s approach to spam detection, Spambrella does not treat bulk mail as spam, as there might be legitimate cases where such mail needs to be delivered (e.g. some end users might opt-in to a medical newsletter on diabetes, and classifying such an email as spam is clearly a false positive).
